Jump-working
I don't know what else to call it. And jump-working sounds fun.
I'm trying to describe my preferred way of working, where I basically do... whatever the fuck I like. Schedules and plans don't work for me. Themed days can go die.
The absolute scatter-brain that I am, I grew frustrated with my inability to focus on anything for long enough to complete it. So this is what I decided to do instead:
- complete disrespect for restrictive work time. I work whenever I feel like it.
- no deadlines (of course there's deadlines, but I ration deadline-pressure only for the most important things)
- listen to the brain - if I'm bored of something, I give myself permission to stop
- I got a hungry brain indeed - when I stop working on omething, I immediately pick something else up
- This lack of structure used to make me anxious, so I decided to obsessively time-track every project I work on, without controlling anything. It really helped with the anxiety.
I couldn't believe what happened when I decided stop fighting my brain. In a typical day, I'd jump between different projects at will - it looked like I was naturally mixing up types of work. So every time I started something, I was 100% engaged. It was wonderful. I typically got everything (and more) done and was very satisfied in general.
The downside to this is that I now HATE pre-scheduled meetings. How else do you do meetings anyway? What if I don't feel like paying attention to something at the designated time at which we decided to talk about said something? This is why I prefer e-mails, slack, figma-comments. Sounds like a lot of people do.
Now you know what I mean by jump-working. Or freestyling. Or just working..?
