Having your (digital) pants and wearing them too
Problem:
One of the biggest issues for the new internet of Web3 and the Metaverse is how we 'own' virtual assets. We've seen it already with NFTs:
"So what if you own it? I can right click to own it too"
Copying the image gives you exactly the same object the owner has, with exactly the same utility.
Now imagine you're a big-time Metizen - you drop big money on the must have pants of the season. Dinero out, data in: the 3D files consitituing the pants now residing in your virtual wardrobe.
As cool as pants on a harddrive are - people need to be able to see them. However to do that, they need the 3D files you have on your harddrive. So you send the data, they pop the it into their GPU, which poops out the pixels of your wonderful pants. Unfortunately for you, they still have all of that data. The data is everything required to also 'wear' those pants. What you both have is exactly the same, except only you had to pay for it.
Solution:
Digital items live on their own virtual machine, constituting of a renderer with 3D files locally stored (which can't be accessed externally). When a view of the metaverse is rendered, a client does looks for any items in frame. The client sends its camera information to those items, which send back a rendered image. The client then integrates the incoming images into their scene, and outputs the final render view.
When you buy the pants, you buy the only access token to write the pants' pose, so only you can 'wear' them - you own the utility. No one who sees them ever sees the data, so they can't be copied.
You can have your pants, and wear them too.
