don't say gay
I got in to a discussion with a friend about some bill that was signed into law in Florida that, depending on your political orientation, either (a) made it illegal to talk about being gay in classrooms, insinuating that anyone who supported it is a homophobic bigot, or (b) was an attempt by concerned parents and legislators to push back against the relentless and all-encompassing ideological revolution currently sweeping through every single American institution.
After expressing support for the governor who signed the bill into law, my friend reacted with righteous indignation against a perceived attack on the rights of her friends and family members who identify as gay, and shock that a "Jew of color like yourself" could support such a thing.
I have a rule: any time an interlocutor expresses surprise or discontent at an opinion I express on the basis of some immutable characteristic of my perceived identity, I politely change the subject.
Identity politics is a brain worm that eats at the foundations of enlightenment civilization; soon it will all come crashing down.
