Don't fool yourself in the morning.
Don’t fool yourself. I don’t anymore.
Most mornings, I get this strong urge to just dive into work right away. Like, do something, anything, just to feel like I’m being productive. My hands need to be busy, right?
But here’s the truth: that’s a trap.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I used to believe that starting early meant doing more. But that’s just not how it works. First off, nobody can do deep, focused work for more than 4–5 hours a day. It’s just not humanly possible. You have 8 hours of work scheduled.
And second, just doing something isn’t the same as making real progress. Doing the right things, with intention, is what actually moves you forward.
That’s why I’ve stopped rushing into work right after a chaotic morning - waking up, making breakfast, getting the kids to school. Instead, I take a moment.
I pause. I think. At least I try.
What do I actually want to achieve today? What’s the one thing that really matters? I picture it done - feel that little wave of pride and relief as if I’ve already finished it.
And then, with a calm and clear mind, I start. One step at a time.
Because being busy doesn’t mean you’re being productive. And starting early doesn’t mean you’ll finish strong.
