Alibaba moment for India engineers
I am the type who like analogies. I understand things better with analogies. I am aware that this type of thinking is not dynamic, and perhaps out of touch with reality. But as a thought exercise i enjoy doing this in my head. sometimes it helps me avoid bad startup ideas outright. And many times it makes me believe a bad startup idea as a good one lol. Its not a good instrument but I am aware of it so its fine.
Okay, this morning, a read a twitter post from legendary bharatiya entrepreneur Shridhar Vembu sir. It was a brilliant overview of how software evolved and the markets around it functioned over the last 30 years.
So i am immediately thinking - if india produces millions of software engineers then there has to another way to use this moment in time as an opportunity to build a different kind of market around it. Traditionally, they were hired by offshore companies to do the back office work, maintain IT infra, and some mindless tasks. The key was these engineers needed a lot of managing on premises and QA/QC from overseas for their work.
If AI coding will continue to allow Big companies to trim off their engineer recruiting then there will be a huge gap in the indian software engineers supply side. What if it happens within india too?
So, how can the supply side of the market adapt?
If i was an engineer, I would swallow my pride and start productizing my services either solo or as a team. I would offer large companies worldwide the same level of service at a fraction of cost.for eg Pay me 50K/year to maintain your IT infra than paying 250K to a middleman company in the US.
