A glute awakening
Recipe: lots of awareness and curiosity on how your backside contributes to your movement, a bit of tension in your lower abs, lots of micro exercises to train your mind, and a couple medium-hard workouts. Took 2-3 weeks, not much time every day.
Result: My body feels more alive, my back hurts less. This morning it felt like my legs were one piece going all the way up to my back, whereas before it felt like my glutes were separate.

Do these in any order as you’re curious:
- See if you can get comfortable tensing your lower abs just a little while standing. This support seems necessary.
- See if you can feel the support of your spine up your whole body, especially your front. (h/t michael ashcroft)
- lay on bed on belly, tense one then the other, use your hands to see if you’re succeeding. Can you do it without tensing the rest of your leg? or moving your hips? can you tense different parts in different ways?
- Do half a squat, move up and down a couple inches using glutes. Focus on how it makes your body move. I did this a lot throughout the day.
- Are your glutes tensing when you’re walking? If not, figure out when they’re supposed to, and exaggerate it. I’d sometimes have to stop walking and do #4 to remind myself what they feel like.
- Meditate on the feeling in your body in your glutes and lower abs to build awareness there.
