Write Like You Talk
What does that even mean? I guess it's good advice if you're naturally eloquent. But what about for those of us that aren't?
"Write like you talk" sounds great but even just looking at it on the screen... it looks a bit odd if I'm being honest. Guess I can't knock it until I try it.
I have a tendency I inherited from my father where I can say a whole lot of words without actually saying anything at all. Or I'm saying so much it's basically word vomit.
When I try to write, I overthink every single word choice, every sentence structure. And I edit while I write. This usually results in a whole bunch of nothing that "feels safe."
So my question is, if you're a bad writer, does that mean you're a bad thinker? Or perhaps you just lack the ability to articulate things coherently even though it's clear in your mind. Does such a thing exist?
I make excuses where I tell myself I'm just spread thin across languages, that I can't sacrifice being articulate at one at the expense of losing the others.
On the other hand, perhaps I truly just haven't spent enough time actually thinking to the point where I could articulate what's in my brain.
So here I am. Writing like I'm talking.
Not sure how I feel about it.
What are your thoughts?
How do you write?
