Why I decided to start writing
I have wanted to pursue a Master's degree for well over a year now. The desire to do so has been all-consuming and if I'm being honest, exhausting. I find myself struggling to write the essays, and more particularly, the infamous statement of purpose. It's not that I can't find purpose. It is that I do not know how to demonstrate to a stranger, that I have purpose. Most universities tend to equate a student's ability to achieve their purpose with their "proven" academic record. Proven, of course, only means the top 5 or 10 per cent in a class. So, conversely, if I'm not in the top 5 or 10 per cent in a class, does that mean I don't stand a chance to study at some of the best universities? Will the fact that I happened to study my undergrad in a college which values rote-learning more than deep thinking really prevent me from achieving the education of my dreams?
I've thought about this deeply and it is only when I started penning these thoughts that I realised, that while all of the above might be entirely true, nothing truly stands in my own way, but me. I can't do much about my grades (although top 20th-30th percentile isn't too shoddy, I'd think). What I can do is do what is asked of me- state my purpose.
Now- why am I writing about this here? Because writing this here gives me accountability. To be accountable to my words, to have a physical reason to practise what I preach is what I believe will give me the confidence to unhesitatingly and fearlessly state my purpose. My purpose in this life, as cliche as it may sound, is to change the world. And change the world, I will.
