Who am I (and for how long)
There's this scene from the Netflix series Sense8 (which I recommend) where the protagonists of the show mull the question: who am I? It's a beautiful moment where they rhetorically pose the constituent questions required to answer the big one. Your love, your fears, your losses all together make you, you. For the show, that scene was to establish a sense of equality that is sourced from the uniqueness of every being. I saw that. But for me it was also a personal thought experiment - what is the sum of all my experiences?
It's been a half a decade since and I am not the person I was then. I look around me and I see two kinds of people. Some so blissfully settled into their skin, unyielding to the effects (ravages?) of time. Others (like me) who find themselves still uncertain of the value of any position. Or able, at any rate, to resist considering the arbitrariness which inheres in committing to one position or value over another.
Though it seems a blissful ride, I'm not sure I prefer the former way of being. I'm fortunate in my short life of two and thirty that I've seen places, read things and heard people that have made an impact on my life. Such that I've been able to add layers and shed old ones.
I find in a time of extraordinary polarity and a cheapening of human life, questions to yourself about yourself - who am I, who was I, who will I be - helps take the edge off.
