Week 1 at remote areas at Volta region, Ghana
What a humbling experience has been this one week. Met some wonderful people and felt the pain of some random people sharing the same space as us on planet earth. All of us have it so different and our needs/ demands are so diverse but when you participate in medical camps as these you realise how privileged you are. Some just fight for even the basic needs while we work ourselves up for petty issues. Being grateful for all you have and make doing with available resources is a skill to master. Urban life spoils us for choice.
I visited this place as a mental health expert and so far it has been a wonderful experience interacting with the local villagers and even the expats (medical students) from New Jersey- most common mental health conditions observed so far were depression and anxiety. Some of the kids may have delayed speech and nutritional deficiencies were observed across all the communities.
My experience at 37 military hospital has been of great value here as I have been helpful in counseling clients even with physical health conditions.
Also personally I realised that even under challenges my body is very kind and strong- it sticks with me and helps me overcome the challenge. I walked the most here in a long time, did a hike for canopy walk, fed monkey at a sanctuary and the whole experience was humbling and amazing. The weather up here is so soothing and relaxing. Maybe this is my time to make the most of my time. I am loving this experience and I hope this stays etched in my memory for a long time.
Times like these are just very humbling and rejuvenate the soul. Just do you, feel every moment and work your shit out.Peace out.
