The remarkable feat of 2022
I have always struggled to read books and I'm not talking just about the textbooks. No matter with how much enthusiasm I buy a book, the completion rate of reading a book used to be very low for me. However, this year I experienced a major shift in approach towards building a habit of reading. I wanted to summarise my learnings here which I gained from this amazing book by James Clear called "Atomic habits".
#Learning 1 : You tend to repeat an activity which is associated with your IDENTITY.
So now after reading this book I am no more a 'trying to be a reader', instead I am an avid reader.
#Learning 2 : Habit stacking
The best way to start a habit is to sandwich it between existing routines. This way your brain doesn't have to spend energy on finding cues.
#Learning 3 : Prime your environment to make future actions easy
Mindfully designing your surroundings can be a game-changer towards developing and retaining habits. If you keep munchies right in front, high chances you'll break your dieting resolutions.
#Learning 4 : Don't aim to be pro from the start, try to be consistent instead
Most of the times we get into vicious cycle of executing things in the most perfect way. This way we raise the barrier to continue a habit and due to human trait of choosing the easy path we tend to leave that habit in between. Hence, author gives a mantra called '2-minute rule' where you reduce the exercise to 2 minute effort.
It took me 9 months to complete this book. However, slowly and steadily, the compounding effect of 1% (read 1 page) bore fruits.
Moving towards building a new habit this year: Blogging!!
Onwards and Upwards.
