Re, "Rules"
A "frame" is an arbitrary boundary, created for a specific purpose.
A "rule" is a specific instruction to implement this frame/framework.
If you think the frame is useful, then apply the operational rules to benefit from it.
Not following a rule means the rule is not helpful, and/or you don't want to be in the game which uses the rules as the basis for the game.
If you participate in a soccer game, you have to abide by the rules of soccer. You can't touch the ball (unless you're a goalie) just because you feel like touching a ball.
If you don't like "following the rules of the game," don't play the game.
Get off the field or the court.
Or create a game for yourself.
It's a waste of time to join a game where you can disregard a rule when you feel like it. That's what children do.
Art is a construct.
It cannot exist without limits, boundaries, or rules
You learn to do a genre/type of art by learning the rules well.
Then you break them, in which case you've created something new altogether.
One has to learn about how to follow the rules - deeply, and with commitment - first.
Then you can break them (when the time is right) with skill, meaning, specificity, cunning, and yes.... purpose.
This is what will define you as an artist.
This is what a serious artist does, period.
This is the basis of participating in the Great Conversation of your craft.
Creative discipline means learning and applying to the best of your ability, the grammar of your medium (aka the rules of the "game" you're in).
I call this "learning the language of the ongoing conversation" you might have the fortune to participate in later."
