Nicheless on Nicheless
Species, amongst other things, are defined by their niche. The environment they interact with defines the trajectory of their evolution. You notice a tradeoff between specialization and flexible adaptability. Typically, to dominate a particular niche, a species must specialize. The Environment Confines and Refines. They are confined by it and they refine themselves for it. To Dominate it.
Evolution. Adaptation.
Survive. Thrive.
Humans as a species however, seem to have escaped this fundamental trap. We are brainy and bipedal, social and cultured. We make tools, cultivate land and tell stories. We create myth and magic- constantly reinventing ourselves across space and time. No one thing defines us.
We have dominated every environment. We have hunted and gathered, cultivated and machined our way across the globe, bent landscapes to our will and transformed the earth in our wake. Our niche is nearly unbounded. When we do find a boundary, we immediately test it. Humans have broken down boundaries between niches like no other species has broken down. We have escaped the paradigm by mastering a different game. We have learnt to specialize without sacrificing breadth and generality.
The human niche is niche-switching. Being nicheless, if you will :)
Personally being Nicheless means not having an easy answer to the "what do you do" "what interests you" "what do you want to do with you life" questions. As if it could be just one thing.
Being Nicheless - Curiosity. Exploration. Adventure.
