Minimalism vs nature
Siebren de Vos published this thought-provoking post: https://nicheless.blog/post/the-beauty-of-nothingness
And it gave me some food for thought.
I replied to him:
"I think the human mind does better with minimalism and simplicity and order... however, nature abhors a vacuum. Generally, humans consider "the wilderness" as "chaos", and yet, when you understand an ecosystem, it is seamless order, and simply so. Yet it is abundance! Unless it is ill, infested by invasive non-native plants, or animals (including humans in many cases). Only then is it 'minimalist'." Monocultures are not resilient, nor are they healthy for the global ecosystem. In human and animal development, a diverse, interactive, enriched environment improves cognition, mental and physical wellbeing, and reduces senescence. Compare an animal in it's natural habitat vs an animal in a bare zoo cage (circa early 20th century, not now).
Is a monoculture of the mind the same? What about a diverse mental ecosystem?
What do you think about maximalist/diversity/abundance vs minimalism overall? I know it's a bit apples and oranges! But still interesting to think about. There are elements of both I enjoy. I'd love to know your thoughts!
