Why its so easy to sound like you're full of shit on Twitter
The problem with being an expert on Twitter is that there's no obligation to back your claims up with any real world experience.
The fact that you can regurgitate other peoples ideas with little to no consequence means that, over time, people on twitter drift towards more talk, and less walk.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Instagram is a great counter example here. Getting attention on instagram means actually doing something interesting offline, and then taking a picture of it.
For example, I joined instagram because I started making ramen. To keep playing I have to keep making ramen. I can't just talk about making ramen. More attention means upping my game.
The point here is that I can't bullshit anyone. My credentials are right there on my profile. You can gauge the exact level of my ramen game in an instant. There's photographic evidence and date stamps.
Before you throw up in your own mouth, I get that everything falls apart when you have people selling their "lifestyle" and talking shit into a camera. Within the context of professional faceless accounts, I retain my point. Faceless just means that it's not about you, it's about the thing that you're doing. By professional I just mean that you have some desire to hone your craft and get better at what you do over time.
Plot twist: Instagram keeps you focused. The social feedback nudges you to work at the edge of your abilities and push yourself, while the platform connects you to the best people in your scene and keeps you constantly inspired.
If Twitter survives this next phase its in, and I'm rooting for it, I do hope it comes out feeling more like the best parts of instagram.
