From nicheless to niche…
I don’t have a niche. Or to be more precise, I probably have several different niches depending on who I’m talking to and what I’m doing.
I talk about PR and public affairs with students and clients and fellow PR people. Within these fields, am I a tech specialist? A B2B specialist? A charity specialist?
I talk about no code x AI on Twitter. And about my journey to build stuff myself. And a bit about policy. Previously? About being a startup founder. Currently? The balancing act of parenthood.
I used to worry that the diversity of my projects, interest and overall lack-of-niche might confuse people, make me seem scattered or flakey. But earlier this week I heard an analogy that calmed my fears. Musicians, in their early years, often experiment with various genres and styles before settling on a signature sound. According to the analogy, this process is similar to building in public and finding your niche.
This analogy has made me feel more comfortable sharing my journey, as wide-ranging as it may be in its current guise. Just like an aspiring musician, I believe that through trial and error, I will eventually discover the thing (or things) that lights me up enough to settle my nicheless mind.
