Diversity: Culture & values
Came across a captivating question recently by Nicheless founder Louis on his post "12 questions that captivate me". Can a society with diverse, conflicting values survive?
I believe only a society with diverse and conflicting values can survive. Humans follow their desires to pretty much any extreme. If a particular society is similar in one value, the Overton window on what is acceptable widens quickly, and the momentum of rituals moving from acceptable to policy moves very quickly.
The part of the world which blindly follows capitalism is the one responsible for climate change. The extreme belief of both scientific and religious fanatics have examples of some destruction.
Diverse values allow for debate, balance, some slowing of the momentum of majority which might not stop the inevitable, but buy some time. Diverse values also is a type of A/B test for self-selection at times, and groups learn from others success all the time, pretty quickly.
Apart from that, life can get pretty boring without options, I think. Everyone's mileage varies and not everyone wants the same things.
