Divisions
The graver division in society is not between those who support one side of an ideological position, but between levels of devotion and objectivity to the ideological position.
Between LOYALISTS and LEANERS.
The loyalists find no wrong in their positions, and those who subscribe to them. If there's any fact, any line of reasoning, which challenges their strongly held opinion, then that fact or reason goes through one of the following stages.
It is either outrightly denied.
Or characterized as being made with an ulterior motive.
Otherwise it is graded as being part of a larger conspiracy theory.
If above don't work, then the loyalists pledge ignorance to the fact, or the depth of the facts.
If the facts are very evident or the persuader very forceful, they try to draw an equivalence or discredit the one presenting the contrarian viewpoint in any way possible, as a means to distract the discussion.
As a last resort they would accept the fact or reasoning to be true, but at a very surface level, without introspecting the validity of their assumptions.
They behave like devotees towards the idea they hold to be true.
The leaners on the other hand, while still subscribing to an ideological side, are able to find faults and limitations even in the side they lean towards.
Lean we all will, as pure unbiased state is almost impossible.
Most things we come across are in the grey.
The leaners realize this, and their subscription is nuanced, and more importantly, open to change.
Their allegiance is towards some first principles; and not to people or groups.
In any struggle between the loyalists and leaners, the force of conviction of the loyalists generally wins in the short term.
The void after the victory vacates the ideological space for leaners to re-emerge.
